Electricity Generating Public Company Limited or EGCO Group, led by Mr. Tawatchai Sumranwanich, President, presented the role of the Thai private sector in managing the Power Trilemma during a panel discussion titled "The New Power Trilemma: Sovereignty, Transition & Competitiveness" at Gastech 2026. He highlighted that "uncertainty" is the new challenge facing the energy sector, emphasizing portfolio diversification as a key strategy to address the Power Trilemma.

Mr. Tawatchai Sumranwanich stated that “Southeast Asia's power systems have remained resilient despite recent market disruptions. However, the assumption that energy security can always be achieved at a reasonable cost has come under significant pressure as LNG supply constraints and global fuel price volatility forced governments and utilities to balance energy security, affordability, and sustainability more carefully.”

The region continues to experience strong electricity demand growth driven by economic development, electrification, digital infrastructure expansion, and emerging technologies. This underscores the need for sustained investment in energy infrastructure while maintaining system reliability and competitiveness.

On solving the energy trilemma, EGCO Group emphasized that the main challenge is not the availability of capital but investment certainty. The company identified three critical enablers: consistent long-term energy policies, market mechanisms that value reliability and flexibility, and bankable commercial structures such as long-term power purchase agreements and transparent tariff frameworks.

Looking ahead, EGCO Group believes that while some current disruptions may be temporary, volatility itself is becoming the new normal. The power sector is expected to face increasing geopolitical risks, climate-related impacts, rapid technological change, and rising electricity demand linked to digitalization and AI-driven growth.

“To enhance resilience, EGCO Group recommends three priorities: diversifying fuel sources and technologies, accelerating investment in grids, storage and regional interconnections, and pursuing a pragmatic energy transition that balances reliability, affordability, and sustainability. The company stressed that future success will depend on building flexibility and resilience into energy systems from today,” Mr. Tawatchai concluded.
