19 December 2023

Electricity Generating Public Company Limited or EGCO Group confirms its commitment to driving sustainable development through its support to the International Conference on Biodiversity 2023 (IBD 2023). The company’s exhibition and participation in the discussion on sustainable development action and goal titled “EGCO Group on the Sustainable Development Pathway towards Net Zero” have demonstrated its support to the domestic and international networks in natural resources and biodiversity conservation, and action to reduce impact on the global warming. The international conference was recently held at the Ratchamongkol Hall in Suan Luang Rama IX Botanical Garden with over 600 participants from Thailand and overseas.

Mr. Thepparat Theppitak, EGCO Group’s President, said that with the vision of “to be a major sustainable Thai energy company with full commitment to environment protection and social development support,” EGCO Group has always placed high importance to the environment and biodiversity of the areas in which it has operated business in eight countries, including Thailand and overseas, in Asia Pacific. Believing that “a good beginning would yield good result”, EGCO Group emphasizes on control and reduction of negative impact on its business activities while trying to increase positive impact on the society and the environment. The company also realizes that climate change and biodiversity conservation are correlated. Since EGCO Group operates upstream business that depends largely on natural resources in producing energy, the company has introduced “Cleaner, Smarter, and Stronger to Drive Sustainable Growth” strategy to enable it to achieve the goal to reduce its impact on the environment and society. This strategy will also support the energy transition towards sustainability.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Worpong Sinsukthavorn, EGCO Group’s SVP – Corporate Planning, said that EGCO Group has clearly determined the 3-stage roadmap towards low carbon society. The first stage, or short-term goal, is to reduce carbon emissions intensity by 10% while increasing the amount of renewable power generation to 30% by 2030. The mid-term goal is to achieve carbon neutral by 2040. Lastly, the long-term goal is to achieve net zero by 2050.

In achieving these goals, EGCO Group aims for no net loss for biodiversity, and minimum impact from its business operation on ecology system and biodiversity throughout the life cycle of a power plant. The company will not operate a new power plant near the protective areas as announced by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) or World Heritage areas, and adopts no gross deforestation, and net zero deforestation practice. EGCO Group has promoted natural resource and biodiversity rehabilitation in major watershed forests in Thailand through the “Thai Conservation of Forest Foundation (TCOF)”, a charitable organization established and supported by EGCO Group for over 20 years.
